Hey there, drivers of the Great White North! Willy's Tires & Wheels here, your one-stop shop for everything tire and rim related in Mississauga. We've been keeping Canadian cars rolling for over 28 years, and we see a lot of things come through our doors. One common issue? Unbalanced wheels!

Now, unbalanced wheels might not seem like a big deal, but trust us, they can cause a whole lot of headaches (and shaky steering wheels!). So, let's talk about why wheel balancing is important and how it can benefit your car (and your sanity!)

What is Wheel Balancing?

Imagine your wheels are like perfect little pancakes – nice and even all the way around. That's what balanced wheels are like. But sometimes, due to imperfections in the tire or rim, weight can be unevenly distributed. This creates a wobbly situation, kind of like a lopsided pancake. Yikes!

Wheel balancing fixes this by adding small weights to the rim. These weights counteract the uneven weight and make your wheels spin smoothly, just like perfectly balanced pancakes would flip on a griddle (although we don't recommend trying that with your actual tires!).

Why is Wheel Balancing Important?

There are a few reasons why keeping your wheels balanced is important:

  • Smoother Ride: Balanced wheels mean a smoother ride. No more feeling like you're constantly hitting little bumps! This is especially important on those long Canadian road trips.

  • Tire Wear: Unbalanced wheels can cause uneven tire wear. Imagine that lopsided pancake wobbling all over the griddle – it wouldn't cook evenly, right? The same goes for your tires. Uneven wear means replacing them sooner, which can be a real drag on your wallet.

  • Fuel Efficiency: Unbalanced wheels can also affect your fuel efficiency. Just like an unbalanced washing machine uses more energy to spin, unbalanced wheels make your car work harder. Who wants to spend more money on gas, eh?

  • Safety: In extreme cases, unbalanced wheels can even contribute to steering problems. Yikes!

Let's keep things safe on those snowy Canadian roads.

Signs You Need Wheel Balancing

Here are some signs that your wheels might be out of balance:

  • A vibration in the steering wheel, especially at higher speeds.

  • Uneven tire wear.

  • A bumpy ride.

  • Your car seems to pull to one side.

How Often Should You Get Your Wheels Balanced?

We recommend getting your wheels balanced every time you get new tires, or roughly every 10,000 kilometers.  If you hit a pothole or curb, it's a good idea to get them checked out just to be safe.
